The Benefits vs the Drawbacks
Genetica DNA Laboratories periodically receives inquires
from clients regarding home paternity testing. Home paternity testing consists
of a self-administered mouth swab that is send to the testing laboratory
with a mail-in kit provided to you by the laboratory. As you evaluate
your paternity testing options, we encourage you to consider the
following:
Home testing results are NOT a good aide in making your
decision whether to officially pursue paternity issues.
Listed below are
some of the statements you will find on the home testing paternity
results:
"We expressly disclaim any and all responsibility for the
accuracy of this report",
"We disclaim all responsibility for the validity of this
report".
In other words,
you do not need to document the identity of the tested individuals, and the
testing laboratory is not responsible for the accuracy of the test
results.
Do you want to
make important life decisions based upon such an agreement?
Home testing is a pay now AND pay later scenario
Although you may
have no current plans to use your paternity test in court, circumstances
may arise in the future where you desire to use the test results as legal
evidence. In addition, you may desire an official paternity report for
health insurance or Social Security benefits. Paternity tests are not
admissible in court unless prepared in accordance with very strict
guidelines, including a documented chain of custody of the specimens.
Unlike home testing, Genetica DNA Laboratories' procedures are designed
to meet these guidelines. For these reasons, the results of home
paternity tests cannot be used in court or for any other official or
legal purposes. If you select the home testing option and then desire to
use the test results for a legal reason, you must pay again for a legally
admissible test, so you pay twice.
Home testing may result in legal liability for
non-custodial parents/alleged parents
An authorization
from a minor child's legal custodian, or a court order, are required for
testing of children under 18 years of age. Are you sure you have proper
legal consent and authority prior to testing? If not, you should consider
whether home testing might expose you to legal liability to the child
and/or to the child's guardian.
Home testing does not comply with the Parentage Testing
Standards of the American Association of Blood Banks
The American
Association of Blood Banks (AABB) promotes the high standards of care for
paternity testing. Home
testing does not satisfy these standards. . New York Residents: New York State Regulations allow
DNA testing laboratories to examine specimens only at the request of a
licensed physician or attorney.
