Family Relationship testing
DNA family relationship testing has an important role in the adoption process. The benefits of DNA testing and the reasons to consider DNA testing in adoption cases are illustrated in the below described situations.
Birthparent Verification for Relinquishment of Parental Rights
A woman routinely receives documentation of her biological maternity through the hospital medical records where she gives birth to the child. A man may receive his documentation of paternity through a DNA paternity test. Adoptive families, adoption attorneys, and some states often require and/or request DNA parentage testing to ensure that both true biological parents of the child knowingly relinquish their parental rights, thus protecting the child and the adoptive family from legal complications and disruption of family life in the future. Additionally, DNA parentage testing at the time of adoption provides the child and the adoptive family with important medical and genetic history information.
Assisted Reproduction and Surrogacy Identification
DNA parentage tests are often used for genetic identification and verification of a child carried by a gestational surrogate mother. Such testing is done to disprove biological relationship between the child and the surrogate mother, and to prove that the individuals who donated sperm and/or eggs towards the creation of the child are actually the true biological parents of the conceived child.
Similarly, DNA parentage tests are often used for genetic identification of a child conceived by an in vitro fertilization to verify that the child is the biological child of the intended in vitro fertilization sperm and/or egg donors.
Reunification of Biological Families
DNA family relationship testing serves as one of the most important tools in reunification of biological family members who have been separated through adoption. DNA testing provides the most conclusive way for correct identification of biological parents, grandparents, and siblings. DNA family reconstructions and DNA studies of maternal and paternal lineages can also provide valuable genetic family information.
